A shooting in Vienna late Tuesday left two people dead and two others seriously injured, prompting a major police operation in the city’s Leopoldstadt district, according to Austrian authorities. Vienna police responded to reports of a violent dispute at approximately 7:30 p.m. local time at a residential building on Vorgartenstraße. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a 44-year-old woman inside an apartment. A 24-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were also found at the scene with serious gunshot injuries and were transported to hospital.

Police investigation continues after deadly apartment shooting in Vienna, Austria’s capital city.

Authorities confirmed the younger woman is in life-threatening condition, while the man remains hospitalized with serious but stable injuries. Shortly after the initial discovery, an exchange of gunfire occurred outside the building between police officers and a male suspect, also 44 years old. The suspect fled the area by car. Police later located his vehicle nearby and found him dead inside. Authorities stated that the man died from gunshot wounds but did not confirm whether the fatal shot was self-inflicted or the result of the earlier exchange with officers.

Investigation launched into Vienna shooting incident

Vienna police closed off the area surrounding the incident and launched a coordinated emergency response involving special operations units and multiple ambulances. Authorities said the situation was brought under control swiftly, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are working to confirm the sequence of events and determine the relationship between the suspect and the victims. Forensic teams remained on site through the night, and several witnesses were interviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Officials stated that all recovered evidence is being evaluated as part of the criminal investigation. The Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office has taken over coordination of the case and will oversee the legal proceedings once the investigation concludes. The shooting occurred in Leopoldstadt, the second district of Vienna, located northeast of the city center. The district is primarily residential and includes a mix of apartment buildings, shops, and public parks. Local residents were advised to avoid the area on Tuesday night as emergency teams secured the site.

Austria’s strict gun laws under spotlight after incident

Law enforcement officials have not disclosed how the suspect gained access to the firearm used in the attack. Authorities also refrained from releasing further details about the ongoing investigation or the condition of the victims beyond the initial medical assessments. The names of the deceased and injured individuals have not been released, in accordance with Austrian privacy laws. Police emphasized that formal identification procedures are still underway and that families of the victims have been notified.

Austria has strict gun control laws, and firearm-related violence remains relatively rare. However, Tuesday’s shooting is one of the deadliest incidents involving small arms in Vienna in recent years. Officials said all relevant government agencies are being briefed as part of the standard post-incident protocol. Vienna police confirmed that more information will be made available as the investigation progresses, but stressed that no further public updates will be issued until facts have been fully verified. – By EuroWire News Desk.
