European Union Deploys Aircraft and Crews to Combat Wildfires Across Continents

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires persist across various European regions, countries have intensified their collaborative firefighting efforts. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism was activated by Belgium and Spain to request additional support after fires strained national resources. Responders included aircraft, helicopters, and ground teams working alongside local crews in both nations. Satellite mapping technology has been employed to monitor fire zones and bolster emergency response planning throughout multiple parts of Europe.

EU sends aircraft and crews for Europe wildfire response
EU wildfire support brings aircraft, crews and satellite mapping to affected regions.

Belgium received two rescEU firefighting aircraft from Sweden to assist with operations in the Hautes Fagnes area. Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, with Dutch aircraft also supporting firefighting efforts. The latest assessments indicate that over 3,000 hectares have been affected by the blaze. Belgian emergency personnel, military units, farmers, and international crews have been actively engaged in managing the fire, while authorities imposed restrictions on roads and water sources used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles participated in the Belgian firefighting effort. Ground teams focused on accessible zones, while aircraft targeted more difficult-to-reach sections. Farmers played a vital role in maintaining water supplies for emergency units operating within the fire zone. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home, although some residents of Küchelscheid remained restricted due to ongoing fire conditions.

French Firefighters Enhance Operations in Spain

To bolster firefighting in Aragón, Spain received 104 firefighters and 36 vehicles from France. The region had already seen about 16,000 hectares burned when European assistance arrived. On August 18, Aragón authorities issued red alerts for 14 fire danger zones, compared to eight the previous day. Authorities also highlighted the presence of extremely dry fuels across several central and northern regions, adding further strain on crews already combating active fires and monitoring at-risk areas.

Copernicus Emergency Management Service provided support with rapid satellite mapping to response teams across Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These maps facilitate the measurement of burned areas and help identify locations affected by active fires. The European Commission manages international aid coordination via the civil protection system, enabling participating nations to deploy personnel and equipment across borders upon request for additional assistance.

European Firefighting Resources Support Multiple Emergencies

Ahead of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe maintained a joint reserve of 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Additionally, 777 firefighters from 14 nations—including Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal—were positioned across various locations. This collective system allows governments to seek assistance when their domestic capacity is overwhelmed. Emergency coordinators can then match requests with available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources offered by member countries.

The current operations involve multiple separate fire emergencies rather than a single cross-border incident. Belgium continues to rely on aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and local logistical support in the Hautes Fagnes area. Spain has incorporated French firefighters and vehicles into its efforts in Aragón. Across Europe, authorities are also utilizing satellite data to monitor affected zones. By the end of July, the continent’s burned area was approximately 2.5 times higher than typical for this time of year.
