BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation reached approximately 3.3% in August 2026, marking an increase from 2.9% in July. The inflation rate was 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Eurostat issued the preliminary estimate on September 1. Consumer prices rose by 0.4% from July according to the harmonised index of consumer prices. The latest data clearly indicates a rise in headline inflation across the euro currency zone.

Among the main categories influencing inflation, energy prices experienced the largest annual surge. The energy inflation rate hit 14.3% in August, up from 10.3% in July. Additionally, energy costs increased by 2.9% month-over-month. Service sector inflation declined slightly to 3.0% from 3.3%. Non-energy industrial goods saw an inflation increase to 1.2% from 0.9%. Meanwhile, inflation for food, alcohol, and tobacco remained steady at 1.2%.
Adjusted measures that exclude certain categories showed more moderate shifts during the month. Inflation excluding energy stayed at 2.2% in August. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco eased slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation rates excluding energy and unprocessed food dropped to 2.1% from 2.2%. These alternative measures offer different perspectives on price changes, removing categories prone to sharp monthly fluctuations.
Energy prices drive August inflation increase
Inflation figures varied significantly across the 21 member countries of the euro area. Lithuania reported the highest estimate at 5.8%, with Cyprus at 5.2% and Bulgaria at 5.1%. Spain’s rate was 4.5%, Belgium’s 4.2%, and Luxembourg’s 4.0%. Estonia’s inflation was the lowest at 1.3%. Malta followed at 1.9%, and Finland recorded 2.4%. Germany stood at 2.9%, France at 2.7%, and Italy at 3.2%.
Monthly changes in consumer prices also varied across the bloc. Belgium experienced a 2.1% increase from July, while Luxembourg’s rise was 1.8%. Cyprus posted a 1.5% monthly gain. France and Bulgaria each saw an increase of 0.8%, whereas Ireland, Spain, and Malta each rose by 0.6%. Finland’s prices fell by 0.4% for the month. Slovakia showed no change, Germany increased by 0.2%, and Italy’s monthly rise was 0.1%.
Broadened euro area membership shapes 2026 inflation data
Since Bulgaria adopted the euro on Jan. 1, 2026, the euro area’s composition expanded to include 21 countries. Data up to December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member group, while figures from January 2026 onward account for the enlarged zone. The European Union’s statistical system applies a chain-index formula to accommodate membership changes, allowing inflation data to reflect the current composition while maintaining continuity with earlier periods.
Eurostat plans to release the full harmonised consumer-price data for August on Sept. 17, 2026. The subsequent flash estimate for September inflation is scheduled for Oct. 2. This index monitors changes in prices paid by households for consumer goods and services. Annual inflation compares prices to the same month last year, while monthly inflation measures the short-term price movements from the previous month, offering a detailed view of recent trends within the euro area.
