Eurostat reports EU maritime import volume hit 1.1 billion

    September 26, 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Ocean freight continues to dominate European trade flows, as non-member states delivered 1.1 billion tonnes of goods worth 1.27 trillion euros to the European Union via maritime routes. Data released by Eurostat underscores sea transport’s central role in sustaining single-market supply chains. On the export side, European manufacturers shipped 500 million tonnes of physical cargo valued at 1.069 trillion euros to global markets, solidifying maritime corridors as the chief artery for extra-EU commercial trade.

Eurostat reports EU maritime import volume hit 1.1 billion
Heavy duty commercial transport trucks move cargos along established cross border trade routes.

Maritime transit dominated physical trade volume, representing 73.3 percent of all extra-EU import weight and 72.6 percent of total export weight. When evaluated by monetary valuation, ocean shipping accounted for a smaller relative proportion, comprising 50.2 percent of total import value and 40.4 percent of export value. Statistical documentation indicates that the EU imported 1.1 billion tonnes of goods from non-EU trading partners primarily in heavy bulk formats, including fossil fuels, raw agricultural commodities, ores, and industrial chemicals, which carry high physical mass relative to their baseline commercial valuation.

By contrast, air transport represented a negligible fraction of physical volume while capturing a prominent share of total commercial value. Aviation logistics accounted for 0.3 percent of import weight and 2.9 percent of export weight, yet these high-value cargo consignments made up 20.7 percent of overall import valuation and 29.1 percent of export valuation. The contrast underscores how high-value, time-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals, advanced microelectronics, precision industrial machinery, and luxury items rely on international air freight networks despite carrying minimal physical weight compared to maritime bulk shipments.

Maritime Shipping Handles Over Seventy Percent of Total Import Weight

Road transport also registered a higher proportional share in commercial value than in physical weight volume, accounting for 19.5 percent of total import value and 24.9 percent of export value, compared to 6.0 percent of import weight and 17.4 percent of export weight. Regional logistics analysts note that trucking services handle crucial cross-border freight movements connecting neighboring non-member states across Eastern and Southeastern Europe. For rail transport, physical volume metrics exceeded overall valuation figures, with rail handling 2.6 percent of import weight and 2.9 percent of export weight while representing 1.2 percent of import value and 1.3 percent of export value.

The data release, published in conjunction with World Maritime Day, highlights the structural dependency of the European single market on secure ocean shipping corridors. Administrative representatives at the European Commission noted that maintaining open, resilient maritime supply routes remains essential for industrial supply chains and energy security across all twenty-seven member states. Port authorities across major European hubs, including Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges, and Hamburg, continue expanding automated terminal handling infrastructure to process high-density ocean freight arrivals efficiently without creating supply chain bottlenecks.

Air Logistics Capture Twenty Percent of Import Value on Minimal Weight

The statistical overview confirms that the EU imported 1.1 billion tonnes of goods from non-EU suppliers across diverse global regions to satisfy domestic manufacturing and consumer demand. As global maritime logistics adapt to evolving trade policies, environmental regulations, and geopolitical conditions, European policymakers continue monitoring modal transport split trends. The findings provide an empirical baseline for future infrastructure planning, port capacity expansion, and multilateral trade negotiation strategies across the European Union.

Official reporting protocols established by statistical agencies will continue tracking quarterly freight movements across sea, air, road, and rail vectors. Detailed analytical breakdowns regarding partner country contributions, specific commodity categories, and regional port performance metrics remain accessible through official institutional portals. The published data provides clear benchmarks for evaluating transport sector decarbonization progress and long-term commercial logistics resilience across the continental trading zone.
