European Commission allocates €2.3 million for cholera containment in Africa

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has approved a sum of €2.3 million in emergency humanitarian aid to support cholera response efforts across four African nations. Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad are the recipient countries. The funding will be directed toward treatment facilities, disease tracking, access to clean water, and sanitation initiatives. Public health authorities continue to battle outbreaks in West and Central Africa, with Nigeria experiencing the most significant surge among these countries, particularly in Borno State, at the heart of the outbreak.

EU channels €2.3 million into Africa cholera response
Cholera response funding targets treatment, clean water, sanitation and disease surveillance.

Nigeria will receive €1.5 million from the emergency aid package. This funding aims to facilitate deployment of response teams and provide cholera treatment supplies. It will also support water treatment efforts both at public outlets and within households. The resources can also be used to bolster surveillance activities in hard-to-reach communities. Additional measures include case management, public awareness campaigns, and community engagement efforts. These initiatives aim to curb transmission and enhance access to treatment, especially in areas with high infection rates.

Data from the regional cholera situation indicate a notable increase in reported cases throughout 2026. The World Health Organization documented 90,049 cases across 18 countries in its African Region by June 28. During the same period, authorities reported 1,528 fatalities. Nigeria alone accounted for 26,848 cases and 181 deaths, with 19,887 new cases and 97 deaths in June. Over 95% of Nigeria’s cases originated from Borno State, with Maiduguri, Jere, and Monguno among the most affected regions.

    Emergency funds bolster outbreak response

The Central African Republic is set to receive €500,000 as part of the aid initiative. The funds will support patient treatment, vaccination campaigns, sanitation programs, and access to potable water. They will also enhance disease detection, community outreach, and safe burial procedures where necessary. As of June 28, health data showed 386 cholera cases and 31 deaths in the country. These resources will aid local response teams in quickly identifying cases and maintaining treatment services amid the ongoing outbreak.

Cameroon is allocated €100,000 to strengthen response operations in affected areas. This funding covers additional personnel, medicines, treatment centers, and oral rehydration points. The country reported 108 cases and six deaths through June 28. Chad will receive €200,000 to improve sanitation, water access, community surveillance, and patient care. During the same period, Chad recorded 109 cases and three deaths. The total allocations for all four countries amount to the full €2.3 million emergency package.

Nigeria sees sharp increase in June cases

In June, 12 African countries reported a total of 27,954 new cholera cases, marking a 95% rise from May. The region also documented 284 cholera-related fatalities during this month. Nigeria registered the highest number of new cases, followed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan. The surge in Nigeria was predominantly concentrated in Borno State. Factors such as conflict, displacement, poor sanitation, and seasonal rainfall have compounded health challenges in communities affected by the outbreak.

Cholera causes severe diarrhea after ingestion of contaminated food or water infected with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. If not treated promptly, infections can lead to rapid dehydration. The EU assistance targets immediate needs in the four beneficiary countries, including treatment capacity, surveillance, vaccination where applicable, sanitation improvements, and access to safe water. It also supports direct community engagement in the affected regions. This €2.3 million emergency fund enhances ongoing national and humanitarian efforts in addressing the persistent regional cholera outbreak.
