Starbucks reverses open-door policy requiring purchases for facilities access

Starbucks has announced a reversal of its 2018 open-door policy, requiring customers to make a purchase before accessing restrooms, seating, or Wi-Fi. The updated “Coffeehouse Code of Conduct,” which takes effect on January 27, 2025, applies to all U.S. company-owned stores, including approximately 1,300 locations in Texas. The new policy outlines expectations for customer behavior, prohibiting discrimination, harassment, outside alcohol consumption, smoking, vaping, drug use, and panhandling.

Starbucks reverses open-door policy requiring purchases for facilities access

According to a statement from Starbucks spokesperson Jaci Anderson, these measures are aimed at prioritizing paying customers while maintaining a welcoming environment for all. This policy marks a shift from Starbucks‘ 2018 open-door policy, introduced after a widely publicized incident in Philadelphia. Two Black men were arrested while waiting for a business associate without making a purchase, sparking accusations of racial profiling.

The backlash prompted Starbucks to conduct nationwide racial-bias training and to revise its policies to allow non-paying customers access to facilities. The reversal comes after years of challenges tied to the open-door policy, including reports of disruptive behaviors and safety concerns in some locations. In 2022, Starbucks closed 16 stores in various cities due to such issues. The company aims to balance inclusivity with the need for a safe, comfortable environment for both customers and employees.

Texas, the state with the second-highest number of Starbucks locations after California, w ill see widespread implementation of the new policy. Cities like Houston and Dallas, which are among the top U.S. cities for Starbucks locations, will be significantly affected by this change. As Starbucks transitions to the updated policy, staff will receive training on enforcement procedures, which may include involving local law enforcement if necessary. This move is part of Starbucks‘ broader strategy to restore its community-focused atmosphere and address operational challenges while ensuring a consistent customer experience nationwide. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
